Dailies

Freelance designers: show how you think, not only the finished work

Dailies is a Chrome extension that records your video calls with clients and cuts captioned vertical shorts from them, ready to post. Your portfolio shows finished work, and every portfolio looks alike. What sets you apart is the way you stand up for a choice in front of a client. You do it at every presentation and in every round of feedback, and those moments are gone as soon as you hang up.

Which of a freelance designer’s calls make good shorts?

A design project is settled in a handful of calls. Dailies reads each one from start to finish and keeps up to eight passages of 12 to 90 seconds that stand on their own: the ones where you explain why, and not only what.

  1. The brief

You ask the questions that turn “something modern” into a real brief. Those questions are your method, and few clients know that a designer starts there.

  2. Presenting the design directions

You say why one direction answers the problem and why you dropped the others. The short shows you explaining it, not your mock-ups.

  3. Client feedback

You are asked to make the logo bigger. Your answer, calm and reasoned, is a classic that all your peers will share, and that your future clients will be glad to have heard beforehand.

  4. The handover

You explain how to keep an identity alive without you: what is fixed, what can move. A client who hears you there knows that you deliver more than a file.

Why start from your calls rather than a video shoot?

  • Your process is worth more than the result

A finished design can be copied; a line of reasoning cannot. On a call you say what you understood about the client, what you turned down and why: that is what people pay a designer for, and a portfolio does not show it.

  • No editing to do in the evening

You know how to edit, and you have no wish to after a day of production. Here there is nothing to film and nothing to edit: the shorts are ready a few minutes after you hang up.

  • A look you can put your name to

Fifteen caption styles, each with its own font, colours, motion and backdrop. You pick one, all your shorts follow it, and each one downloads in Full HD.

What kind of shorts can a freelance designer post?

These are the kinds of titles a freelance designer’s shorts carry. Each comes from a question a client asked, and shows how you answer it.

  • Can we make the logo bigger?

  • A real brief in three questions

  • Why I dropped this direction

  • What does “modern” mean?

  • What must never change

  • Client feedback that really helps

How does Dailies work?

  1. Record the call you were going to have anyway.

Open your call in Chrome and press record. Dailies captures the call, your microphone and your webcam.

  2. It finds the moments worth posting.

Dailies reads the whole call and keeps up to eight passages that stand on their own. Silences, filler and false starts are cut out.

  3. Reframed for a phone, on whoever is speaking.

Each short fills the vertical frame with your webcam, or with your guest when they speak. One switch blurs your guests.

  4. Captioned in fifteen flavors.

Pick a look once and every short follows: font, colours, motion, even the backdrop behind you.

  5. One call, up to eight shorts.

Watch them a few minutes after you hang up, download the ones you like in Full HD, and post them on LinkedIn, TikTok, Reels or Shorts.

What about the confidentiality of your calls?

What I say on a call belongs to my clients: can I make shorts from it?

What your client paid for is an answer to their own situation, and that is not what Dailies looks for. It rates every passage on what it reveals that is private or confidential, turns down those that reveal something and keeps the ones that make sense outside the call: a piece of advice, a method, an opinion. That is a model’s judgement, not a guarantee. So nothing is posted for you: you watch every short, and when one does not suit you, you say why and Dailies leaves that subject out of your next calls. Your contract with your client remains the rule.

Nobody must know I work with this client: what do the shorts show?

One switch blurs your guests and disguises their voice in all your shorts; on a new account, it is on from the start. A short mostly shows you, explaining. That leaves what is said: if a passage names your client or describes their company, the blur changes nothing. That is why Dailies turns down the passages that reveal something private, and why you have the last word: a short Dailies proposes is not a short that is posted.

Do my calls stay stored on a server?

Your calls do reach a server, since Dailies has to receive them to cut your shorts from them, but the original files do not stay there: the sound and picture of a processed call are deleted 10 days after processing, 15 days at the latest. What stays is what your shorts are made of, that is, the only pieces of video they use, and the call’s transcript, until you delete the call, which you can do at any time. You choose which calls you record, and your recordings train no model.

Frequently asked questions

How do you show your design process on video without filming yourself?

By starting from the calls where you already explain it. Dailies records the calls you hold in Chrome on Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Zoom, spots the passages that stand on their own and makes up to eight captioned vertical shorts per call from them.

Do the shorts show my mock-ups or my shared screen?

No. A Dailies short frames whoever is speaking, vertically: your explanation makes the short, not the file open on screen. So a client’s mock-ups that have not been made public yet do not end up in it.

Can I choose what the captions look like?

Yes. In Dailies you pick one of the fifteen caption styles once, and all your shorts follow it: font, colours, motion, right down to the backdrop behind you.

Do I have to tell my client that the call is being recorded?

Yes: telling your client is up to you, before you begin. In the shorts Dailies cuts, one switch blurs your guests and disguises their voice, and you then decide what you download and post.

Which languages does Dailies handle?

Dailies handles calls in French and in English, and you post each short yourself on LinkedIn, TikTok, Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts.
