Dailies vs SquadCastThe SquadCast alternative that records the call you already have, then cuts its shorts
SquadCast and Dailies both record a conversation between people who are not in the same room. SquadCast is a remote recording studio for podcasts and video. It joined Descript in 2023, and Descript says its own studio, Descript Rooms, will eventually replace it. It records; the editing happens afterwards, in Descript. Dailies records the call you were going to hold on Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Zoom and delivers up to eight captioned vertical shorts a few minutes later, with no editing step in between.

What SquadCast does
SquadCast is a remote recording studio in the browser, for podcasts and video. It records separate audio and video files, locally, and uploads them progressively; a guest joins with a click, with no download and no install. SquadCast joined Descript, as announced in August 2023, and its recordings are edited in Descript. The site squadcast.fm is still online as a standalone studio, but Descript’s help centre states that Descript Rooms will eventually replace SquadCast, with notice given before any change and no end date set yet. Descript Rooms is Descript’s own remote studio: it runs in the browser (Chrome and Chromium-based browsers, Safari, Firefox), records each participant on their own machine in up to 4K, as separate files with a cloud backup, and has a control room for producers. Guests receive an invite link, set up their microphone and camera and ask to join. Neither studio makes clips itself: clips, captions and editing are done in Descript’s editor.
Where Dailies and SquadCast differ
A studio link, or the call already planned
A SquadCast session, like a Descript Room, is a place of its own: the host shares an invite link and the guest joins it instead of the usual meeting. We found no feature that records a call held on Google Meet, Teams or Zoom in either of them. Dailies records exactly those calls, from Chrome: the call tab, your microphone and your webcam, with no bot in the call.
Recording is where SquadCast stops
SquadCast and Descript Rooms record. Choosing passages, framing them vertically and captioning them happen afterwards, in Descript’s editor. With Dailies there is no second step: it picks up to eight passages itself, reframes each on whoever speaks, cuts silences, filler words and false starts, and burns in animated captions. The shorts are ready a few minutes after the call.
SquadCast is becoming Descript Rooms
SquadCast joined Descript in 2023. Its site still offers the studio on its own, and Descript’s help centre states that Descript Rooms will eventually replace it, with plenty of notice before any change and no date set yet. Someone comparing studios today is therefore also looking at Descript Rooms, which records in the browser in up to 4K. Dailies sits elsewhere: it is not a studio, and the question it answers is what to do with the calls you already hold.
What SquadCast and Descript Rooms do that Dailies does not
Separate local files for every participant, in up to 4K in Descript Rooms, a control room for producers, and recordings that go into Descript’s editor for a full edit. Dailies does none of that: it is neither a studio nor an editor, it only makes shorts from the calls it recorded, and you download each one in Full HD to post it yourself.
Questions people ask
Is SquadCast still available?
Yes, for now. The site squadcast.fm is still online as a standalone studio. SquadCast joined Descript in 2023, and Descript’s help centre states that Descript Rooms will eventually replace it, that notice will be given before any change, and that no end date is set yet.
Can SquadCast record a Zoom, Google Meet or Teams call?
We found no such feature in SquadCast or in Descript Rooms on the pages we read. Both record the conversation held in their own studio, which guests join from an invite link. Dailies records the calls you hold in Chrome on Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
Does SquadCast make clips or shorts?
Not in the studio itself. SquadCast and Descript Rooms record; clips, captions and editing are done afterwards in Descript’s editor. Dailies does both in one go: it records the call and delivers up to eight captioned vertical shorts a few minutes after it ends.
Does Dailies replace SquadCast?
Not for a podcast. Dailies is neither a studio nor an editor: it makes shorts from the calls you hold in Chrome on Meet, Teams or Zoom. For an episode you record with remote guests and edit yourself, a studio such as SquadCast or Descript Rooms is the right kind of tool.
Your next call already holds your next shorts.
Add Dailies to Chrome, record the call you were going to have anyway, and watch its shorts a few minutes after you hang up.
