Dailies

Dailies vs Google Meet RecordingThe alternative to Google Meet’s recording for turning calls into shorts, not into a file in Drive

Google Meet can already record your calls, so the question is fair: why Dailies? Because a recording and a short are two different things. Meet saves one video of the meeting, showing the active speaker and anything presented, in the organiser’s Google Drive, and Gemini can write the notes in Google Docs. That is an archive, and a good one. On Google’s recording pages we found nothing that picks a passage, cuts it and reframes it for posting: that work would be done in another tool. Dailies takes care of it: it records the Meet call in Chrome and, a few minutes after you hang up, delivers up to eight captioned vertical shorts. It works on Google Meet, so this page is not Meet against Dailies. It is about what becomes of the call afterwards.

What Google Meet Recording does

Recording is built into Google Meet. It requires one of the Google Workspace editions Google lists (Business Standard, Business Plus, Essentials, Education Plus and others) or a Google One subscription with 2 TB or more, and an administrator who allows it. The video includes the active speaker and anything presented, and lands as one file in the Google Meet folder of the organiser’s Google Drive. Participants get a notification when the recording starts or stops. With a shared screen the resolution goes up to 1080p, and a recording stops after 8 hours. Captions can be recorded in a chosen language and then show as subtitles on playback. Alongside, “Take notes for me” has Gemini write the meeting’s notes in Google Docs, a short summary with action items and fuller notes with decisions, in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Spanish, with an eligible Workspace edition or Google AI plan. During the call, Meet can blur your background or replace it.

Where Dailies and Google Meet Recording differ

One video in Drive, or eight shorts to post

Google’s help page describes the recording as one video of the meeting: the active speaker and anything presented, saved to Drive. It describes no clip or highlight feature, and we found no vertical format on it. Dailies starts from the same call and delivers up to eight separate shorts in 9:16, each on a passage it picked itself, reframed on whoever speaks, with a line above it that says which question it answers.

What a short needs and an archive does not

An archive should keep everything, hesitations included. A short should not. Dailies removes the silences, the filler words and the false starts, burns in animated captions in one of fifteen styles, and can blur or replace the room behind you. We found no cleanup of that kind on Google’s recording pages; captions, when recorded, show as subtitles on playback. Meet’s own background blur applies during the call.

Meet records Meet

Meet’s recording covers Google Meet, on the editions that include it, and the file lands in the organiser’s Drive. Calls held on Zoom or Microsoft Teams are recorded by those platforms, each on its own conditions. Dailies is a Chrome extension: it records Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom’s web client the same way, from the call tab, your microphone and your webcam, with no bot joining.

What Google Meet does that Dailies does not

Meet keeps the entire meeting as a file in Google Drive, and Gemini writes its notes: a summary, decisions, action items. Dailies does none of that. It writes no notes and no summary, and it only makes shorts from the calls it recorded itself. If you need a record of what was decided, Meet’s recording and notes are built for it.

Questions people ask

Can Google Meet turn a recording into short clips?

We found no clip or highlight feature on Google’s recording help page. It describes one video of the meeting, showing the active speaker and anything presented, saved in the organiser’s Google Drive. Shorts would have to be cut from that file in another tool. Dailies records the Meet call itself and delivers up to eight captioned vertical shorts.

Where do Google Meet recordings go?

To the meeting organiser’s Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, according to Google’s help page. The recording is one video file. Dailies, for its part, delivers shorts, which you download in Full HD to post them on LinkedIn, TikTok, Reels or Shorts.

Does Dailies replace Google Meet’s recording?

No, and it does not try to. Meet’s recording is an archive of the meeting, and Gemini’s notes are its written record. Dailies writes no notes, no summary and no action items: it makes shorts from the best passages of the call. These are two different needs.

Does a bot join my Google Meet call with Dailies?

No. Dailies records from a Chrome extension: the call tab, your microphone and your webcam. Meet’s own recording is built into the call too, and notifies participants when it starts or stops.

Your next call already holds your next shorts.

Add Dailies to Chrome, record the call you were going to have anyway, and watch its shorts a few minutes after you hang up.
