Dailies vs Screen StudioThe Screen Studio alternative when your content is said in calls, not shown on a screen
Screen Studio and Dailies are both recorders that do the polishing for you, and that is about all they share. Screen Studio is a Mac app for screen videos: it adds the zooms, smooths the cursor and frames the picture while you show a product or explain a tool. Dailies is a Chrome extension for conversations: it records the calls you hold on Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Zoom and cuts captioned vertical shorts from their best passages. One serves the video you set out to make, where the screen is the subject. The other serves what you say to clients when nobody planned a video.

What Screen Studio does
Screen Studio is a screen recorder for Mac. It records the whole display, a window or an area, with your webcam, your microphone and the Mac’s system audio, from every app or the ones you select, and it can record an iPhone or an iPad. Its promise is the finish it adds by itself: automatic zooms, smooth cursor motion, framing. Camera cutout removes the background behind you in your webcam, and face tracking is among its features. It transcribes on the Mac, with Whisper or Apple Speech Recognition, to generate captions whose size you adjust and to let you edit by the transcript; filler words and the pauses between thoughts are shortened. Formats include wide 16:9, square and vertical 9:16. It exports in up to 4K at 60 frames per second and creates shareable links.
Where Dailies and Screen Studio differ
The screen is the subject, or the conversation is
Screen Studio is built for what happens on a screen: a product demo, a tutorial, a walkthrough. Its automatic zooms and cursor smoothing make full sense there. Dailies is built for two people talking. Its work is to find the passages of a call worth posting, up to eight of them, and to turn each into a 9:16 short that shows whoever speaks. Neither tries to do the other’s job.
A call captured as a screen, or track by track
Screen Studio’s guide says system audio recording lets you capture meeting audio, so a call can be captured as a recording of your Mac’s screen. Its pages do not mention separate tracks for the people in the call. Dailies captures the call tab, your microphone and your webcam, the webcam on a track of its own, which lets it reframe a short on you, full screen, or on your guest’s tile, cropped on their face.
A Mac app, or a Chrome extension
Screen Studio is a macOS app that records the Mac’s screen, and iPhones and iPads. Dailies lives in Chrome and records the calls you hold there: Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom’s web client. No bot joins the call. Once the call is over there is nothing to trim or export: the shorts arrive a few minutes later, and you download them in Full HD.
What Screen Studio does that Dailies does not
Screen videos, first of all: demos and tutorials with automatic zooms and a smoothed cursor. It also exports in up to 4K at 60 frames per second and lets you edit by the transcript. Dailies does not edit a video you upload. It only makes shorts from the calls it recorded, with passages it picks and cuts by itself.
Questions people ask
Can Screen Studio record a video call?
As a screen recording, yes. Its guide says system audio recording lets you capture meeting audio, from all apps or the ones you select, on top of the display, your webcam and your microphone. Its pages do not mention a separate track per participant. Dailies records the calls you hold in Chrome and keeps your webcam on a track of its own.
Does Screen Studio make vertical videos with captions?
Yes. Its formats include vertical 9:16, and it generates captions from a transcript made on your Mac, with an adjustable size. Its pages do not describe caption style presets. Dailies burns animated captions into every short, in one of fifteen styles, and reframes the picture on whoever speaks.
Does Screen Studio remove filler words?
Yes. Screen Studio shortens filler words and the pauses between thoughts, and lets you edit by the transcript. Dailies also removes silences, filler words and false starts, in the shorts it cuts from your calls.
Is Dailies a Screen Studio alternative for demos and tutorials?
No. Dailies makes shorts from the calls it records in Chrome, and does not edit a video you upload. For a demo or a tutorial where the screen is the subject, a screen recorder such as Screen Studio is the right kind of tool.
Your next call already holds your next shorts.
Add Dailies to Chrome, record the call you were going to have anyway, and watch its shorts a few minutes after you hang up.
