Dailies

Dailies vs ElaiThe Elai alternative for people whose videos should come from calls, not from slides

Elai and Dailies both take the shoot out of video. Elai, now part of Panopto, generates videos for learning and development teams: you give it text, a PPTX file or the link to an article, and an AI avatar narrates it. Dailies records the calls you hold in Chrome on Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Zoom, and cuts captioned vertical shorts from their best passages. So the choice between an avatar and your calls comes down to what you start with. Elai needs a text and no call. Dailies needs calls and no text.

What Elai does

Elai, also written Elai.io, is an AI video generator for learning and development, and its homepage says it is part of Panopto. It builds a video from text, a PPTX file or an article link, narrated by one of more than 80 stock avatars or by a custom avatar, with voices in over 75 languages and 450 accents; French is listed for France, Belgium, Canada and Switzerland. Its guide for a custom avatar asks for five minutes of footage, so that the best segment can be selected, shot on any background for a selfie avatar or on a plain green one for a studio avatar. Elai says only the mouth area is modified, the other movements staying as filmed. It also clones voices into 28 languages, translates videos in one click, stages dialogues between two avatars, and offers templates in horizontal or vertical format, a screen recorder, a brand kit, interactivity, an API and personalised video campaigns. Its ethics policy says deepfakes and material impersonating well-known people are not tolerated.

Where Dailies and Elai differ

Slides and text, or a conversation

Elai turns what is already written into video: a script, a slide deck, an article. An avatar narrates it, the same way for every viewer, which is what a course needs. Dailies turns what is said into video: the answer you gave a client on a call, in your own words, with the silences, filler words and false starts cut out. If you have documents, Elai has something to work from. If you have calls, Dailies does.

Five minutes of footage once, or a call each time

An Elai custom avatar is made once, from about five minutes of footage shot to its guide; after that, each video needs a script and no camera. Dailies needs no footage in advance and no script, and it needs a call each time: it records the call tab, your microphone and your webcam in Chrome. No bot joins the call.

What the finished video is

Elai’s pages describe training videos, built from templates in horizontal or vertical format. On the pages we read, we found no description of captions, of clips cut from a recording or of posting to social networks, so the table says “not stated” on those rows; its knowledge base, which we did not read, may say more. Dailies delivers one thing: up to eight vertical 9:16 shorts per call, reframed on whoever speaks, with animated captions burned in, downloaded in Full HD.

What Elai does that Dailies does not

A video from a PPTX file or an article link, with no call and no camera. Narration in over 75 languages, one-click translation, voice cloning, dialogues between two avatars, interactivity, an API and personalised video campaigns at scale. Dailies has no equivalent for any of it: its only material is the calls it recorded in Chrome, in French and in English.

Questions people ask

Can Elai make videos from a recorded call?

We found no call recording and no clipping of a recording on the Elai pages we read. Its videos are generated from text, a PPTX file or an article link, and a screen recorder adds screen captures. Dailies records Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom calls in Chrome and cuts its shorts from them.

How much footage does an Elai custom avatar need?

Five minutes, according to its custom avatar guide, so that the best segment can be selected. A selfie avatar can be filmed on any background and a studio avatar on a plain green one; the guide describes recording with a smartphone in 4K at 30 frames per second. Elai says only the mouth area is modified afterwards.

Does Elai work in French?

Yes for narration: its languages page lists French for France, Belgium, Canada and Switzerland, among more than 75 languages. Its website is offered in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Dailies handles calls in French, in English and in both mixed, and its extension’s interface is in French.

Is Dailies an Elai alternative for training videos?

No. Dailies takes no script, slide deck or article, and has no avatar. It makes shorts from the calls you hold in Chrome, to post under your own name. For course videos narrated by an avatar, Elai is the right kind of tool.

Your next call already holds your next shorts.

Add Dailies to Chrome, record the call you were going to have anyway, and watch its shorts a few minutes after you hang up.
